The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) is set to showcase an exciting array of projects through its KVIFF Talents program, offering a unique glimpse into the diverse and innovative world of audiovisual storytelling. From K-pop-themed series to thought-provoking dramas and animated films, the festival's 60th edition promises to be a celebration of artistic expression and cultural exploration.
Creative Vision and Support
Among the six projects selected from over 100 submissions, three feature films and three audiovisual works will receive development funding, mentorship, and the opportunity to present their concepts during the festival. This support system, which includes producing proof-of-concept videos and residency programs, is a testament to KVIFF's commitment to nurturing emerging talent and fostering creative growth.
Exploring Queer Narratives and Personal Struggles
One of the standout feature film projects, “Exposed,” directed by Klára Tasovská, delves into the semi-legal queer milieu of socialist Czechoslovakia. Set during the era of normalization in Prague, the film tells a universal story of personal dilemma and courage through the lens of a young female photographer. This narrative not only explores the complexities of identity but also sheds light on a lesser-known aspect of history, offering a unique perspective on the intersection of queerness and socialism.
Navigating Illness and Finding Solace
Another feature film project, “Nera,” directed by Ivana Vogrinc Vidali, follows the journey of Tereza, a high school graduate whose life is turned upside down by a relentless diagnosis that threatens her sight. Tereza finds solace and a kindred spirit in Nera, her guide dog, only to confront the limitations of a system that prioritizes obedience over instinct. This story highlights the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and the importance of emotional connections in navigating personal struggles.
Road Trips, Friendships, and Self-Reflection
The feature film “Until We Leave,” written by Lucia Čižinská, takes us on a journey with four women in their 30s as they travel to France to visit a friend with a terminal illness. What begins as a shared trip gradually transforms into a profound confrontation with their own lives, relationships, and future visions. Blending elements of tragicomedy and observational road movie, this intimate drama explores the power of friendship and self-reflection during life's most challenging moments.
Animation, Witchcraft, and K-Pop Dreams
In the Creative Pool, two fiction series and one animated film will be presented. “The Inhalatorium,” an animated feature by Bára Anna Stejskalová, follows a 13-year-old girl's quest to find her missing friend at a mountain sanatorium. “Burning Witches,” a series set in the 17th century, tells the story of noblewoman Katuše's efforts to save her sister from being burned at the stake and emancipate those around her. And “K-Dream,” a K-pop-themed series, follows Nikǒ, a European obsessed with K-pop, as he returns to Europe to establish the first K-pop idol academy in Berlin.
A Platform for Emerging Talent
The KVIFF Talents program has supported a total of 23 projects over its previous editions, showcasing its dedication to fostering diverse and innovative storytelling. By providing a platform for emerging talent and offering valuable resources, KVIFF plays a crucial role in shaping the future of cinema and audiovisual arts. These projects, with their unique themes and narratives, not only entertain but also provoke thought and inspire conversation, leaving a lasting impact on audiences and the industry alike.
